Pensioner Yuri Babin has long been dubbed “the kopek millionaire” in his home town of Novosibirsk. He has been collecting ordinary Russian kopeks for more than ten years and, to date, has amassed over five million coins. The weight of this unusual treasury exceeds seven and a half tons. Yuri began to compile his collection in 1998 following wide scale Russian bank defaults. At the time, kopeks became practically valueless, but when Babin went to shops and markets he asked the vendors to give him change in coins of the lowest denomination. Sometimes, he picked them up off the ground.
