Espoo, Finland (AHN) – Nokia announced plans Wednesday to cut 7,000 jobs over the next year as it shifts the company’s focus from Symbian to Microsoft technology for smartphones.

Finland-based Nokia said it will achieve the cuts by eliminating 4,000 jobs worldwide and transferring another 3,000 employees who work on Symbian software technology from company employee status to outsourcing and consultancy group Accenture.

The move comes because Nokia is transferring all its Symbian software technology activities to Accenture. It affects 3,000 employees in the United States, United Kingdom, Finland, India and China.

Nokia said it would phase out using Symbian technology on its smartphones over the next two years in favor of using the Microsoft Windows Phone platform.

Last week Nokia announced a deal with Microsoft to develop smartphone technology that the company says will cut its costs by $1.47 billion per year. At that time, Nokia also announced plans to switch from Symbian software to Microsoft’s software for its smartphones.
